A Comprehensive Guide to Car Painting Techniques and Paint Maintenance

I. Core Techniques of Automotive Painting: From primer treatment to topcoat process

(1) Primer treatment before painting: The key to determining the lifespan of the paint surface

Surface cleaning and degreasing

Use a dedicated degreaser to remove grease, wax and dirt from the vehicle body to prevent residues from affecting the adhesion of the paint (non-woven fabric can be used for wiping to prevent fiber residues).

The old paint surface should be sanded with sandpaper (200-800 mesh) to a rough surface to enhance the adhesion of the new paint. If the metal substrate rusts, it should be treated with a rust remover and then coated with anti-rust primer.

Filling and leveling

The concave areas should be filled with putty (putty). It is necessary to apply thin layers in several times (each layer thickness ≤2mm). After each drying, sand it with 400-600 mesh sandpaper until it is smooth to avoid cracking later.

Sheet metal adhesive should be applied to areas prone to water accumulation such as corners and welds to prevent corrosion.

(2) Coating process: Create a mirror-like effect in steps

Primer spraying

Choose epoxy primer or phosphating primer, and control the spraying thickness at 30-50μm. After drying, gently sand with 600-800 mesh sandpaper to ensure a smooth surface.

Function: Rust prevention and enhancing the adhesion of intermediate paint.

Intermediate coat application

Apply polyurethane intermediate coat paint, spray 2-3 layers, with an interval of 10-15 minutes between each layer, and the total thickness should be 50-80μm. After drying, wet sand with 800-1000 mesh sandpaper to eliminate minor defects.

Key point: The intermediate coat paint should balance filling property and flexibility to prevent cracking of the paint surface in the later stage.

Topcoat spraying (color paint + clear coat)

Color paint: After mixing by color number, spray 2-3 thin layers (with a 5-10 minute interval between each layer) to ensure uniform color. After drying, check for defects such as sagging and particles.

Clear coat: Spray 2 layers (60-100μm thick) to form a protective transparent layer, enhancing gloss and scratch resistance. During drying, control the ambient temperature (20-25℃) to prevent dust adhesion.

(3) Painting Environment Control: The dividing line between professionals and amateurs

Temperature and humidity: The ideal environment is a temperature of 20-25℃ and a humidity of no more than 60%. Excessively high humidity can cause the paint surface to turn white, while excessively low temperature will slow down the drying process.

Dust-free space: Professional spraying should be carried out in a paint booth. The air is purified through a filtration system to prevent dust particles from embedding into the paint surface. (For home DIY, a temporary space can be built with plastic sheets and water can be sprinkled on the ground to reduce dust.)

Ii. Car Paint Maintenance: From daily maintenance to in-depth care

(1) Daily cleaning: Avoid "paint-damaging" operations

Car washing frequency: It is advisable to wash the car once a week. Frequent car washing can easily damage the varnish layer. After rain, it is necessary to rinse in time to prevent acid rain (pH < 5.6) from corroding the paint surface.

Car washing tools and methods

Specialized car wash sponge + neutral car wash liquid (avoid using laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid, as their alkaline components can dissolve the wax layer).

Sequence: Rinse from top to bottom. First, wash away the mud and sand, then gently wipe with a sponge. Avoid back-and-forth wiping (mud and sand particles can easily scratch the paint surface).

Details: Clean the car door gaps, wheel hubs and other parts with a soft-bristled brush. Avoid using a high-pressure water gun to directly direct the sealing strip to prevent water from entering.

(2) Paint surface protection: Active defense is better than passive repair

Waxing (economical and practical type

Choose palm wax or synthetic wax every 2 to 3 months. Before waxing, make sure the car body is dry and clean. Use a sponge to evenly apply it in a circular motion. After 5 to 10 minutes, polish it with a clean towel.

Function: Form a temporary protective film, enhance gloss, and reduce damage from ultraviolet rays and minor scratches.

Glazing/coating (Advanced protection)

Glazing: The glaze is penetrated into the micro-pores of the paint surface through a vibration and polishing machine to form a glassy protective layer, which lasts for 3 to 6 months and requires professional construction.

Coating: Inorganic materials such as silica are sprayed, which undergo a chemical reaction with the paint surface to form a harder film layer (with a hardness of over 6H), which has strong scratch resistance and lasts for 1-2 years.

Invisible car film (High-end protection

TPU material car cover, with a thickness of 8-10mil, can automatically repair minor scratches, resist ultraviolet rays, acid rain and bird droppings corrosion, and has a lifespan of 5-8 years. However, it is relatively expensive (the full car price is 5,000 to 20,000 yuan).

(3) Special Scenario Response: Targeted protection strategies

Bird droppings/tree SAP treatment: Upon discovery, immediately cover with a damp towel to soften it, then wipe with a neutral cleaner to prevent long-term residue from corroding the paint surface (the pH value of uric acid in bird droppings can reach 3, and it can burn the varnish within 24 hours).

High-speed gravel protection: Local car covers can be applied to areas prone to impact such as the front bumper and hood, or underbody armor can be regularly sprayed (not specifically for paint surfaces, so choose with caution).

Winter maintenance: In northern winters, de-icing agents contain salt. When washing the car, special attention should be paid to rinsing the undercarriage and wheel arches to prevent salt accumulation and rusting. The waxing frequency of the paint surface can be increased (once a month) to resist damage from low-temperature freeze-thaw cycles.

(4) Paint surface repair: The boundary between DIY and professional treatment for minor flaws

Minor scratches (no primer exposed) : Gently polish with scratch wax or abrasive, then apply wax to cover. Scratches made by nails without resistance are usually repairable.

Exposed primer scratches: They need to be repaired with a touch-up pen (matching by color number). First apply the primer, then the colored paint, and finally the clear coat. After drying, sand and polish with 2000-mesh sandpaper. However, DIY may cause color differences, so it is recommended to find a professional bodywork and painting shop.

Dent repair: For small dents that do not damage the paint surface, the "scarless repair" technique (pulling out with a suction cup or hot melt adhesive) can be adopted. There is no need to repaint, and the original factory paint can be retained.

Iii. Guide to Avoiding Pitfalls: Common Misoperations and Misunderstandings

Incorrect car washing methods: Directly wiping the car body with a dry cloth (equivalent to sanding the paint with sandpaper), and shooting a high-pressure water gun at the door gaps at close range (causing the sealing rubber strips to age).

Poor-quality maintenance products: Cheap car wax contains abrasive particles. Long-term use will cause the paint surface to become matte. Unbranded coating agents may corrode the varnish layer.

Neglecting undercarriage maintenance: The undercarriage is in long-term contact with mud, water and salt. Undercarriage armor (2-3mm thick) needs to be sprayed annually to prevent metal rusting.

Through scientific painting techniques and systematic maintenance strategies, not only can the paint surface of your car remain as good as new for a long time, but also the metal structure of the vehicle body can be effectively protected, thus extending the service life of the vehicle. If complex painting or deep repair is involved, it is recommended to give priority to choosing a maintenance institution that has a dust-free paint booth and professional color-matching equipment.
